i prefer you to buy acoustic guitar if the songs your going to play are alternative or whatsoever.... classical if you like mellow songs.... if you want to play smoothly, use nylon strings but i prefer you to use steel strings directly so that you won't need to add more effort when trying your steel strings... but if you want to play smoothly... it's still alright to use nylon.... no problem...

If you want to play along with your favorite records, pick up a decent $300 electric guitar. It'll sound good-enough to your ears and will be easy on your wallet. So much of music now-a-days is solos and leads... acoustics don't accomplish these licks very well. Of course, if you need a clean guitar part, just play your electric with no distortion.

The best answer to that question I ever heard is that you should start with whatever type of guitar you like best. You can learn the basics on either type of guitar. If you have a guitar you like you are more likely to be motivated to keep practicing. I recommend going to a guitar store and trying some out. Sometimes you can go to the website of a guitar manufacturer and do a search for a store in your area. I also recommend getting a good book, such as "The Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2006, ISBN # 0-679-74275-1) to learn a bit about different styles of guitar--and different styles of playing, too!

i think you should find a teacher first and ask him for some recommendations on guitars, or go to a guitar shop and ask them for a good guitar as you wouldn't notice the difference between a good one and a bad one. i recommend you to start with a classical guitar and then passing to an electric one. last thing, don't ever buy an electro-acoustic guitar

Just walk into any guitar shop and get yourself a fender squier. This my friend was made for beginners. It is perfect!
