Position:Home>Performing Arts> To flute players: how come my sound sucks in cold weather?

Question:My sound is usually fine in regular / warm weather
but when the temperature starts dropping, my flute doesn't have the same full, pretty sound. Even after I warm up for a long time, the sound is still never restored when it's cold outside. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
(besides storing it in a warmer place)

When your flute gets cold, it will shrink, so it'll tend to sound sharp. Pull out the mouthpiece a bit to correct the problem. Also, if you're outside playing, keep your hand over the mouthpiece to maintain the warmth. It'll help you keep tone and prevent you from freezing your lips when you start playing again. Good luck!

cold effects the metal as well as the moist pads . keep your instrument "warmed " by blowing a silent breath threw the horn every few minutes .

blow lots of warm air in your flute before you play, the weather will make you sharp, so try tuning your flute after you warm up.
