Hi there,

It is incredibly important to have your pointe shoes fitted, as it is more complicated that straightforward shoe size.

I went to 'Freed' in London for my first pair - and I would definitely recommend going to a specialist pointe shoe shop, as there are so many variations in style and shape, it's important to get the best fit and the right amount of support. Having someone who makes and fits shoes for a living is exactly who you want to get advice and support from in choosing your first pair of shoes.

Ordering them over the net or (unfortunately) going to a small local store is usually a BAD idea.

To try and answer you question: generally speaking pointe shoes will be the same or slightly smaller than street shoes, (unlike soft ballet shoes which are usually the same or one size larger than street shoes).

Pointe shoes come in a variety of widths, so it should never be necessary to wear the wrong length to get the correct width.

Make sure toe nails are cut and you are wearing dance tights. You can't go for a fitting if your feet are blistered - as your feet will not sit right in the shoes. Be aware of the size of your current Pointe shoes or ballet shoes if it is your first pair. This will give the fitter a guide as to the size to start with. It is always helpful to pass on any views your teacher has since the teacher will have seen you dance whereas the fitter will not.

The 'Freed' website has got a comprehensive guide to pointe shoe fitting.

Going for a fitting is very exciting and something to relish. I always liken it to going to Olivanders in Harry Potter, to pick out a wand.

Good Luck!
