Position:Home>Performing Arts> What are some good Broadway songs for 17 year old Baritone who likes bands like

Question:My son has a dinner theater thing to sing for in April and we're trying to pick a solo for him....has to be Broadway theme. He has a good voice, and likes all kinds of rock music from old rock to Phish, Dave Matthews, Nickelcreek, etc. But what can he do that he's not going to think is too corny and sounds contemporary? HELP

Gethsemane? No way...most tenors can't do that song well, let alone a baritone. And if he doesn't like corny I'm not sure he'd like the broadway classics.

What I would suggest is something from a more contemporary musical, like RENT or Tick...Tick...Boom! (both written by Jonathan Larson). He may also like something that is funny, even if it's in the traditional musical theatre style. Here are some suggestions:

From RENT:
One Song Glory
Santa Fe

From Tick...Tick...Boom!
30/90
Green Green Dress

From The Last 5 Years
Shiksa Goddess (funny)
Moving Too Fast
A Miracle Would Happen (funny)

From Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Great Big Stuff (funny)

Your best bet is probably going to be "One Song Glory" or "Green Green Dress" if he isn't big into musical theatre. They are both the right sound for his style, likely within his range, and neither of them are flashy jazz-hands broadway that I'm sure you're trying to avoid. Best of luck!

"Jesus Christ Superstar"- "Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say)" –
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat"-"Close Every Door"
"Guys and Dolls"- "Luck be a Lady" or "I'll Know"
"My Fair Lady "-" OnThe Street Where you Live"

If they want a Broadway theme,I would go with a Michael Buble' song. He does a classical crossover with a pop feel.
I'm thinking of his "It's time" CD. Perhaps,"A Foggy Day."
Good luck.

Harry Connick, Jr.....

Maybe look at some of the songs from RENT
