Well, the Japanese flute is called a "shakuhachi" and if you want to play that you could probably find one.

As far as other flutes that sound like them, usually you have to be really good at silver flute or whatever to make it sound like other flutes. Your best bet would be to find the actual Eastern flute you want to play.

they have the pan flute which is bamboo pieces cut to different lengths. Back in the 80's they used to advertise an artist and his pan flute...the stupid commercial came on everyother commercial, but i guess it did its job b/c her it is 27 yrs later and i still remember the damn thing enough to answer your question! lol

Why don't you just get a shakuhachi?
They are beautiful.

in addition to the shakuhachi (Japan) you might look into:
# Dizi - China
# Fujara - Slovakia
# Maceno - Bolivia
# Muhusenoi - Venezuela
# Ney - Egyptian - Egypt
# Ney -Persian - Iran
# Ney - Turkish - Turkey
# Ohe Hano Ihu - Hawaii
# Pensol- Malaysia
# Selingup - Sarawak
# Selingut - Sarawak
# Tongali - Sarawak

And the Native American Flute of North America.

All of these will give you the more woody and breathy sound known in Asian playing.

Western flutes (even wooden flutes) will tend to produce a clearer sound best known in traditional Irish music.
