Position:Home>Performing Arts> Looking for suggestions for intermediate flutes.?

Question:im currently in 8th grade and have been playing flute since 6th grade in my school band. im at the top of the section. and my flute teacher suggested me to upgrade my gemeinhardt to a much higher quality flute. cause this ones holding me back.

i narrowed my favorites down to two. and i need your opinions.

the first is a sonare 6000 series. it is full solid silver and is made from powell.

the second is a miyazawa 101 or 102. it contains no silver except the riser, headjoint, and barrel. but the thing is, this is a low line professional flute. it is fully hand made.

my flute teacher pointed out that buying a bottom line professional flute is better than buying a highh end intermediate flute, no matter what the metal content. i wasnt pretty convinced about what she said, so i need other peoples voices. by the way, theyre the same price.

There are certainly quite a number of intermediate flutes to choose from - especially really nice ones that can take you to the next level. Since you have already narrowed your search down to two models, I will just talk about those two.

I would disagree with what your teacher said about getting a new flute. In reality, it is always better to get a solid silver flute. The sound, response, and life of the instrument will be better. The Sonare brand is great because it is made by one of the top flute makers in the US - Powell. The Powell headjoint on the Sonare will make you sound better with a more focused sound. In addition, the solid silver body is the best choice. I wouldn't go for anything else but a solid silver body. The white gold springs on this model makes for a quick response and light-feeling keys (making it easier to play fast, technical passages).

As for the Miyazawa, the silver plated body is not the best choice for you. The French arms are a good choice - but you can also choose to get that if you upgrade to a Sonare 7000 series.

I am also buying a new flute right now, and I can tell you that it is very important to try lots of different kinds of flutes and let people listen to you as you play them. Not just your teacher, but other people as well. Ask some friends and family. Then you can get lots of different opinions.

I hope this helps!

Actually, you want the best flute for YOU. Try both flutes and see which one fits your ability and style. Don't think about what a flute is...think about what it does. Especially being in the eigth grade, you will eventually want to upgrade from any flute that you buy so get the flute that works best for Y.O.U. Have fun in your endeavor.

I own a Pearl 600 series flute. It's a semi-professional flute with a 10K gold mouth piece, silver head joint, silver plated body, and it plays dark beautiful sounds. I'm in college and my flute is decent for this level. Also, the yamaha 700 series are also beautiful. They have a lighter tone than the pearl flutes, and the weight is lighter too, awesome for playing in concerts 2+hr.
