Is playing the flute recorder the same as playing the flute?

Question:i am an expert flute recorder player and i wanted to step up to something bigger and better, but i'm wondering if it is basicly the same thing because it seems that way.

The recorder is more like a whistle that you blow THROUGH with fingering holes.
The flute has a hole that you blow ACROSS.
