Question:Right now i play clarinet. I have played it for 4 and a half years, and i've wanted to play trombone for a while now, so I think I'm going to switch. I am pretty good at clarinet, so i'm not just switching because I'm bad. Any tips?

I'm a part-time professional trombonist who plays a little clarinet too. They are as different as apples and geometry, first off. Aside from the fact they both play music, they couldn't be any different. Be prepared to start slow and take years to develop the lip muscles you need to play well.

That said, if you really want it, do it. In a typical music school there are many times as many clarinetists applying as trombonists. That's a great foot in the door. And the instrument is so versatile - it's found in more different styles than nearly any other wind instrument, certainly more than clarinet.

Definitely switch! Trombone is a great, great instrument. I have never played a woodwind, but I did play trumpet and switched to Tuba and I still believe that it was one of the best decisions of my life! Low brass is always fun. But I would also say that if you really like clarinet too, don't stop playing it all together. Its really great to get a wide variety of instruments. Good luck! You will LOVE trombone!
