In my shop, I use denatured alcohol on a rag. Lightly dampen a small spot of a soft cloth (like an old t-shirt), then grab the string with the rag and rub back and forth. The alcohol dissolves the rosin and evaporates quickly so that it doesn't hurt the string. About the only string you need to worry about haming with this is natural gut strings, and I'd about guarantee you don't have those on your instrument. :) Be careful not to get any alcohol on the finish of the instrument.

There are all kinds of new products on the market today, so why not call your local music store to see what the latest cleaning product is, their always coming out with something new....so when in doubt ask an expert !!!!!! I love cello music, have you read the book Hilary and Jackie....the movie was terrible but the book is one of my favorites...I've read it, no kidding over fifteen times....it was formerly was titled , A Genius in the Family, so when it first came out it took me two years to find it because they changed the title to Hilary and Jackie and I didn't realize this....you'll probably have to go to the library to find out....because when I went to by it for someone the books stores didn't have it, it's probably now out of print, I think that's because they did such a bad job with the movie...if your a cello player I know that you'll love this book !!!!!! Please read it !!!!!!!!!

I like the answer above, but I'll just add that I have always used those little alcohol pads that you can purchase in the first aid / diabetic section of a store (typically used for cleaning skin, but great for a multitude of things!). They come in boxes of 100, and they're easy to carry around!
