Position:Home>Performing Arts> Broadway Show in New York?

Question:I am going to NY and want to see two broadway show's but cannot decided on just two. The choices are 1. Avenue Q which looks funny, but is not exactly broadway, 2. RENT which I LOVE, but have already seen in Michigan, 3. Young Frankenstein which I know nothing about - expect famous people are in it and it was written by Mel Brooks, and 4. Spring Awakening which is musically similar to RENT, but not very well known. Any thoughts on which two I should choose? Any suggestions for a different show?

It sounds as if you have your heart set on a musical, if so, let me encourage you to see Forbidden Broadway. It is a spoof of the shows currently running and is very funny. It is often performed in some sort of venue that offers a meal, and although, technically it is OFF-Broadway, the distinction of Broadway or Off-Broadway is simply a matter of real estate and not talent level. Only certain theatres within a very samll district are called Broadway theatres, but some of the best plays in New York are often off-Broadway. Remember you've also got Wicked, Lion King, Phantom, Les Mis, Drowsy Chaperone, etc. to choose from.

However, let me encourage you to see astraight play or drama. There is always a Shakespeare (Cymbeline -- OK, not one of his best), the Year of Magical Thinking, Deuce, Moon for the Misbegotten, and inherit the Wind with Brian Dennehy and Christopher Plummer.

Also, there is a TKTS booth in Times Square that will offer tickets to shows for that evening that are not sold out for 50% off plus a $1.50 handling fee. So you can see a show costing $100 for $51.50 -- IF it is offered. "Hot" tickets (shows that are still running at full or near-to-full capacity) will not be available at the TKTS booth

I have heard many good things about Spring awakening! I hope to get to see it myself sometime soon. Wicked is absolutely incredible! I do want to see Ave Q also, but for some reason, I hesitate. It's supposed to be good and beat Wicked at the Tony's for best musical.(don't know how that can be???) I know the songs, but puppets on Broadway don't seem grand enough for me. Even though RENT is awesome, I'd see something you haven't already seen.
