Position:Home>Performing Arts> Learn the cello at 15?

Question:I would love to learn to play the cello, but I am already 15, so do you think it would be possible for me to pick it up quickly. I know that it takes time and practice to learn any instrument, but I've heard it's harder to learn as you get older. I already play saxophone and piano, so I do have some musical talent, but I'd love to be able to play cello as well.

I played cello for 7 years, but I started when I was about 12. You're not starting TOO late, if you're musically inclined, you'd be fine. And you're still developing, and are still at a good age to learn a new instrument.

If you already know your Bass Clef, then that's good! It does take a lot of practice, I had to practice my butt off to make the first row in my orchestra.

If you start it, you won't regret it. It is SUCH a beautiful instrument....in my opinion the BEST sounding string instrument!!! I wish I still played, but I'm in college now and it's really hard to find time. I regret spending all those 7 years playing cello then stop playing....because I kinda feel like I'm gradually letting my talent go down the drain.

Go find a private teacher, and take lessons. Oh and it really does help if you have long arms and fingers. It can be a real PAIN when you're having to play the high notes! It kinda hurts!!

Good luck!!!!

It depends all on the person...you already know how to read music so im guessing yeah

ttly!!!!!!!!!!!! i wanna learn drums and i m 13 i would ttly learn to play them but i already play flute and piano and my mom wont let me. well i dont really play piano. i suck. but i m learning, so it counts!

From what I've heard from the middle school and high school bands in my town - the sax is one of the hardest to learn, and since you already know how to play it the cello should be relatively easy for you to pick up. Good luck!

omg ive played the violin before and its not that hard their both pretty much the same.

If you you have the desire and the ear (to be able to understand and correct your mistakes), then I would say "Go for it!".

You can learn just about any instrument at any age--the only limitation is how much time you get to practice it.

The only exceptions are violin and viola, which use an extreme left-wrist twist that must be learned before age 10 or so, before the epipheses of the distal ends of the radius and ulna start to close. Adults can still learn to play those instruments, but will never become full-fledged symphonic-level virtuosos.

Since you already play piano, you already know your bass clef.

Definitely get a few months' worth of lessons to start.

Yes, Yes, Yes

Go for it! Yeah, some people take it up early, but there are some great cellists that took it up late, or even as a second instrument, that have gone down in cello history! And the cello is the best instrument in the world so everybody should play it anyway.

instruments aren't like a second language. you can learn one whenever. i'm 15 and hope to pick up the flugelhorn soon. my friend is also 15 and is learning the clarinet for the first time. but it definitely helps that you can already read music.

since you are already familliar with music, it should be easier. go for it, dont let anyone tell u other wise

i understand, im 15 and i would love to play the cello too, lol, its so pretty, but i need to concentrate on horn more.

if u play other intruments youll probably be able to pick it up...
little warning though playing a string is really different than sax or piano...
and its a different clef but you play piano so you should be able to read bass clef....
go 4 it
good luck
