Jim Gordon was responible for the piano chord progression. he was the drummer in Derek and the Dominoes. Bobby Whitlock was the pianist in the group, but according to Eric Clapton the part was written by Gordon. The band was recording the album Layla and other Love songs and one night they discoverd Gordon working alone in the studio, playing this chord progression on the piano. Clapton and one of the other band members told him that they had to let them use it on the album. It became the coda of the song Layla which was originally intended to be a guitar song. The guitar duet between Eric Clapton and Duane Allman over Gordon's piano part is what makes the song great in the opinion of many people.
