1&half years, guitar player. how to get good? loosing itt.?

Question:im not beginner at all .. i can learn tabs. anyone can learn to play a tab well .. but to be a true musician you need to make your own music. my friend put alot of stupid crap in my head that theory just messes you up, but ive been getting lessons for piano since i was 3(quit 5 years ago), and it helps ALOT. he was just saying that cuz he doesnt know any thoery.. anyways question is how can i imporve as a musician .. every single time i play i get bored of playing otehr peopels songs .. and when i play i can come up with mainstream stuff no problem, but i dont actually feel it. i think its cuz of all the his stupid standards that i subconciously aim for. i want to learn how to play hard rock/ metal, passionate music, will i if i take lessons, or is it just for beginners?

TAKE LESSONS . . . no offence but your friend is wrong. With ANYTHING, knowledge is the KEY. The more knowledge you can get, the better. You can't practice, Practice PRACTICE if you don't have the knowledge. You have to know what to practice.

If you read and understand music, but can't make it work...change instruments. Guitar drove me nuts....I ended up singing quite nicely...work within your talents....
