Yes, it's a congenital birth defect. His body was also suppossed to be small and frail. He was however quite agail and clever! Try reading "Phantom". It's a GREAT prequel to "The Phantom of the Opera", I couldn't put it down and read it in like 4 hours!

It is a scar from acid.

Well, if the book says he was born with it, do you have any reason to think that's not correct?

Plus, isn't there a reference to his mother not loving him because of his deformity? I think I vaguely remember that, but it's been a long time since I saw Phantom...

there probably wasn't a name for it at the time the book was written, it was just one of those things.
