Position:Home>Performing Arts> Is being a child prodigy...good?

Question:I'm a child prodigy...artist thing... and I know it's a pretty gift that gives me a spetacular edge among the population, but, I have my questions about it. I mean, we have this "performing arts" contest each year called Reflections, and I decided to join it this year (not all years because kids would come up and say they lost). Now everyone is saying," Oh my God, thats so not fair. Your going to win for sure". Can't they just grow up? Anyways, so thats one bad thing. Then theres also the unecessary lore adults have over me. I'm not a flipping diamond. Theres more cons than pros in my life, it seems. But maybe one pro is an equal to five cons. I don't know...

Sometimes people who have it really good don't realize how special that is. Go see how the other half lives. In terms of your emotional state, it sounds like everyone's so focused on your talent that there is something about being a kid that you feel is missing. Talk to your parents. Maybe your parents will take you to a park where you can play with kids who just like to swing on the swings and play basketball and hopscotch. Sounds like you need to just get to be a kid once in a while.

haha

wow.

pray, thanking God for giving such a fantastic gift.

Don't get cocky.

Smile and thank the adults.

Shut your mouth.

"there are more cons than pros..."
GET OVER YOURSELF! goodness just be thankful!

I had some experience with that too. The key is to keep a sense of perspective about it and to be matter-of-fact.

One of the facts is that you're NOT guaranteed to win. You have to compete for it just like everyone else.

Nobody walks up to the kids who try out for varsity football and says "Oh my God, that's so not fair. You're going to make the team for sure; you're a foot taller than the rest of us and outweigh us by at least 50 pounds!"

Nobody walks up to the hotties with the bodies and says ""Oh my God, that's so not fair. You're going to make the cheering squad for sure! You're 15 and look 21 and you shake it like an MTV video babe!"

Every competition has people who are more geared to it than others.

Your pro is that you've found something you're good at beyond your years. Keep it fun. Don't let people sour you on it if it gives you joy (as often happens with people who make their gifts their work).

Another hard thing: One day you'll "grow into" your skills. They'll become age-appropriate, and you won't attract the attention you do now. Trust me...it's bothersome.

Everybody has their own burden to bear and their own gifts to share. Use yours to the best of your ability to be happy, and don't worry about what other people say or think. People have trouble living their own lives; they certainly can't handle anybody else's.

Out of curiosity, I'd love to see/hear what you're bragging about. How old are you and what do you?

what's a child prodigy?
