Can you recomend a cheap effects pedal for heavy rock?

Question:i was looking at the Digitech Grunge but it seems too heavy for what i want. i need something that is distorted but you can still hear the individual notes. i cant afford to spend much but the pedal will probably be used in the studio aswel as live shows as i need for my band.
