Taking a lesson or two would be helpful. If you're looking for good, free instructional material online, check out www.mandolincafe.com, and go to their Mandolin Lessons section. Lots of good articles, tabs, etc. to get started.
i dont know what a mandolin is but the fastest way to learn how to play it is by taking a few lessons
have a teacher
Buy a cord chart. They are available on posters and little 3D wheel spinners.

Look what it did for me

I play guitar. The way I learned was by understanding how to read tablature. Its a very easy process, its 6 lines that represent the strings and the frets of a guitar and show a picking pattern and finger position. A VERY helpful site is www.chordbook.com.
Just remember, it isnt going to happen over night. Stick with it, learn to tune first and foremost....so when you hit that first chord you can hear it clean and clear. Good luck to you

Now go to that site and check it out!!
Just go on google and type in this, how to play the mandolin, there's page after page on this subject and some of them look very good. I play classical guitar, so my expertise is not the mandolin, so I hope that you find what your looking for on one of these sites....good luck !!! bye. P.S. I'm sorry to say this but I hate it when people ask what's the fastest way...there are no short cuts to playing music....if you played guitar I'd tell you to just play chords....otherwise it's a lot of hard work and patience....so please take your time and learn how to play correctly....that's more important then speed !!!!
Think of the mandolin as a guitar turned up-side-down, except the EADG goes high to low, not low to high. In other words, an open G chord is like playing the low four strings on a left-handed guitar. The sound is different of course, but this might help a little, hope so & good luck!
