Position:Home>Performing Arts> Should I just give up?

Question:I'm a 17 year old junior in high school and I have been taking voice lessons for 2 years and acting classes for less than a year.
In the next few months, I want to audition for some things at a community theatre.
It is my dream to be a musical theatre major in college.
But a lot of people who are involved in musical theatre have been doing it there whole lives.
Should I just give up since I don't have that much experience?
Does it matter that I got a late start?
Any advice?

Many times it is not experience that matters - it is talent and drive.

Yes, you want to be realistic, but ultimately do what you love!! Follow your dream as far as it will take you. Go to theatre school, challenge yourself.

Talking from experience (a math major-turned-musician), you can always go further if you care to. It's not a fantasy, it's hard work. And it's worth it.
Why should you give up. If you've really been working hard, you might as well try. Even if you failed, you will have learned something and your work would be worth something.
don't give up unless you stink and please if you are good don't take voice lessons because it makes you voice sound fake!!!! get some opinions on if you are good or not and make sure there not ling to please you
Well you don't seem to lack confidence: "...it has made my voice amazing..." But at 17 you haven't had much of a life, so giving up now would just set a pattern for being a quitter.
Its so easy to be intimidated in a situation like that, but I think you should definitely go for it. In any situation there is always going to be someone who's been doing it longer, or has more experience, but that doesn't mean that they deserve it more. It definitely doesn't make them better than you. If this is your dream you should start now, and give yourself the confidence to pursue it in college and after that...good luck!
WHAT?!?!
no way.
i got a late start with this thing i'm working on and everyone else is soo much better than me but i'm not giving up cuz i know i'm gonna get better at it and i love it
If you can do anything else and be happy doing it without theater in your life, absolutely. Your voice lessons will stand you in good stead for singing in church or perhaps a community choir. There is so much rejection involved with acting and if you are the type of person that takes rejection or criticism personally you are opening yourself up to misery. If you have an innate need for fairness you will not find it in theater. Acting should be pursued only if you have that defective gene and can't be whole without it. Since you are asking the question, you've already given yourself the answer.
I know someone that started singing in her late twenties, and now sings with a highly paid professional group. If "a lot of people have been doing it their whole lives", that means not everyone has. Do it if you love it, and good luck.
