Using a tuner (can be brought in most of the musical instrument shops), for example you want to tune the A string, on the tuner, then play the A OPEN string, and make sure the sound produce is stable in pitch (for tuning, up bow is better since you can apply even force easily). Then, watch the indicator on the tuner, if the string is tuned perfectly, the indicator will be: pointer tuner - point at the middle; digital tuner - green light lights up. If the indicator is on the left half, then your sound is flattened; if the indicator is on the right half, then your sound is sharped. You have to turn the knob tighter if the string sounds flat, loosen it if it is sharped. If you do not have tuner, you can use any tuned instrument to tune your violin (example: piano), but this is not recommended if you are just a beginner. You have to tune your violin everytime before you take it out from the casing, and sometimes when you fell that your violin sounds weird. Ask your violin teacher for more information!
