Where is the "nut" on a Violin?

Question:

Where is the "nut" on a Violin?

I'm trying to teach myself the violin. but the book I'm working out of teaches where the keys from the "nut" but it doesn't help a whole lot if I don't know where the "nut" is. if any one can help I would appreiciate it!
