Question:

I want to know how to sing well?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I've been teaching professionally for about 20 years. I can tell you this. The FASTEST and BEST way to learn how to sing properly is to find a good voice teacher. Look around. Find one that isn't too expensive, but is booked. Be willing to wait for a spot. If they're full, it usually means people are hearing their other students and are wanting to get in. A voice teacher can see you and hear you and make suggestions and adjustments. It really is an art form and the best voice teachers can make magic with even the weakest of the voices.

However, a voice teacher isn't the only way. (It really is the best because you can end up with nasty habits and even destroy your voice if you sing improperly.) You can also sing in choral programs. Some of them have remarkable directors that provide a lot of good singing advice. You can work with other singers that are well trained - many of them just LOVE to help others.

I recommend that you avoid the CDs, DVDs, and books. Everybody is different and those "singing" programs are designed for the mass audiences. I've seen a lot of damage (and had to fix a lot of damage) because what the "program" told someone to do wasn't the right thing for them.

How do you sing well?

1. Fix your posture, head placement, body alignment, etc. This is about 10% of singing.
2. Fix your breathing and breath support/control. This is about 50% of singing.
3. Fix your diction and enunciation. This is about 10%
4. Fix your mouth shape, jaw tension, etc. This is about 10%.
5. Fix your musical style. This is about 10%.
6. Fix your mental state. This is about 10%.

Good luck on singing well!

P.S. Yes, some people just happen to have the ability to sing well and they don't require much training. The best way to find out if you sing well is to ask a voice teacher. Another way is to record yourself and listen closely. Another way is to ask others. Make sure you ask them for their honest critique. There are some very famous singers that were NOT natural singers that had to be trained. So no, you do not have to be a "natural born singer"!
