Most larger cities get audition opporutnities for TV pilots, hard to cast movies, and local commercials. Cut your teeth there before you go anywhere else. LA is not the only game in town. NY, Chicago and San Francisco are also good choices. But, try and make it in a smaller market first. Even community theater can be a great training ground. If your friend is really good, people will notice him.
