Question:

Vibrato hell?

ive played the viola for 6 years now am i am pretty good. my only problem is huge and its vibrato. i just cant get it! ive tried almost everything like doing it infront of the mirror and the egg with rice in it.. it just doesnt help me. I think i just dont understand how i am supposed to keep my finger on the fingerboard and some how move my wrist in a backward motion WHILE supporting my instrument sufficiently. goodness.. help? its makeing me want to stop playing the viola because it feels like i cant advance until i learn this vibrato

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I play the violin and the viola, and had the very same problem. I can't vibrato the traditional way, finger on the fingerboard and moving my wrist back and forth. I actually have to slightly move my entire lower arm for my vibrato. Try putting your elbow on your knee when you practice, slowly move arm back and forth until you get a smooth motion.
That's how I do it.
Hope this helps. Vibrato is tough. :)
