Question:

I'm looking for a version of the Nutcracker that I saw aired a few years ago on PBS.?

This version was a lot darker than typically seen, for instance the uncle who gives clara the doll seems a lot more creepy, and there is a scene that involves a woman caged as if she's an exotic bird, who dances upon release. Anyone know who put on this performance and where I can find it?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Not sure which one this was. They have had at least two on top of the Baryshnikov.

It might be the Maurice Sendak one where all the sets and costumes were designed by him. It was quite dark. There was another excellent one and I can't remember the ballet company but it was my favorite.

Here's a blurb about the Sendak from NPR:

Maurice Sendak, best known as the author and illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are, also created the sets for a 1983 production of the holiday ballet The Nutcracker. He joined Bob Edwards to talk about his collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Ballet. The original E.T.A. Hoffmann story, with Sendak's illustrations, has been reissued.

You might also have seen the Royal Ballet:

In the Royal Ballet, London's 1985 version, Tchaikovsky's score is used and the original order of the dances is not changed at all, but the Mother Ginger dance is omitted. Drosselmeyer is again first seen much earlier here. This version was re-staged with some of the same dancers taking different roles, as well as with new dancers, in 2001. In the 2001 version, Alina Cojocaru danced the role of Clara, a role danced in 1985 by Julie Rose. Anthony Dowell, who had danced the Sugar Plum Fairy's Cavalier in 1985, danced the role of Drosselmeyer in the 2001 version.
