The only difference between the two is if you use your own past, putting yourself in the same state of mind as the character to show the audience how they feel

Putting yourself in the characters shoes is considered more healthy as it keeps you from possibly reliving a horrible event from you own past every time you go out on stage. Where as if you just think about how you would feel if you were them you can then distance yourself after the performance......simply put its less draining
