Scales or technique exercises will seem BORING, but do them; it will build strength and dexterity. It doesn't matter whether you start on an acoustic or an electric; what WILL make a difference to you is how "fast" (ease of playing) the neck & strings are. Many beginners quit early on due to starting on a cheap, hard-to-finger guitar. You fingers will be tender until you build up callouses.

A good mix of both fingering exercises and chords will do you good.

Be willing to be "bad" at the instrument for a while. If you stay at it, you WILL improve.
