Question:

What is some basic information about choir?

(I think that's the correct term..) What's the best way to get started? What kinds of voice types are there and how do you know which yours is? What kind of music do choirs sing?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Depends on what kind of choir you are interested in.

For instance, if you are interested in your school choir (which should be one of the best ways to begin) you simply sign up, and then your instructor will be there to support you 100% on singing solos or trying out for things. Also, they could help seek places for you to audition for local choirs if you are REALLY interested.

However, another great way to start is to get voice lessons! It's a great 1 on 1 thing, and your voice teacher can help you prepare and gain strength and confidence and help you brush up on anything you may need.

In choir there are a possible 5 parts.
Bass - Lowest range for the men.
Tenor - Highest range for the men.

Alto - Lowest range for the women.
Mezzo-Soprano - Middle range for the women.
Soprano - Highest range for the women.

I'm assuming you are a female, so if you have a piano, try doing some scales going up and down from middle C. If you feel more comfortable up in the higher ranges then you are most likely a Mezzo-Soprano or Soprano. If you are struggling with high notes and feel comfortable below middle C then you are most likely an alto. But if you feel comfortable in both ranges then you are "Bi-Sectional" meaning you can sing multiple ranges, if you are, then your instructor will choose the best suitable place for you.

Choirs can sing almost any type of music, honestly. From fast happy broadway to old kings and queens cathedral music. Anywhere there is music with lyrics, a choir can probably sing it. But depending on whether it will sound good or not will be up to the director or the person in charge of choosing the music.

Hope that helps! Good luck! :]
