Question:

How often should I change my acoustic guitar strings?

I used my guitar for about half a year... then I got lazy and quit for about 2 years. In September this year, I suddenly felt like learning guitar again, and I've been practicing chords and stuff everyday or every other day since then. All this time its been the same strings. Everything sounds fine, so I'm not sure if I need to change the strings or not. Also, I should use Light guitar strings, right? 0.012mm, 0.024mm, 0.042mm, etc.

It really depends on how often you play. I try to play at least one hour per day, and I change strings every month, but if you don't play as often, then you shouldn't waste your money like that. If you gig often, then it's usually suggested to change strings every fourth or fifth gig.

What gauge?
This is entirely up to you. Just know this: Light strings (.009 or .010 and sometimes .011) are faster and easier on your fingers, but they have little tone and break easier. Heavy strings (.011-.013) are harder to play fast on, but they have huge tone and last longer. I personally use .013 gauge Elixer nanowebs on my acoustic and .010 Gibsons on my Les Paul, but string choice is really up to you.

Try out different combinations untill you get the right feel.
