Question:

How do you sing words ending in the letter "L"?

Words such as "Noel" and "beautiful" have me unsure whether you swallow, emphasize, or sorta lilt, or what, the "L" sound at the end. In one song we sing, the word "beautiful" has the "beaut-" syllable on a higher note, and the "-tiful" part on two identical and longer lower notes. Do you hold the "uh" sound and then add a "lah" sound? Help!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Always add the last consonant at the last possible moment. In your example, the word "beautiful" would be phonetically sung "bee-oo" on the high note, and "ti (like "tip" without the p) - full (like the word full, only hold the vowel and end on a light quick "luh").

In English we have a swallowed L. Just say the word "swallowed" and feel where the L sound comes from; it comes for the tounge at the back of the throat. In singing, you want a frontal L: like when you say "lah" and the L is produced with the tip of the tounge right behind the teeth. Hope that's clear.
