How to sing better.?

I'm in a band. I'm a male guitarist and we recently lost our lead vocalist. I can humm a tune, but nothing worthy of performing with. is there any way i can better my range/tone/sound etc?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: as you can see many people told you to take voice lessons. thats not a bad idea considering thats what teachers are for to make you better....i take voice lessons and i have to breathe from the diaphragm constantly. sing scales. and push your voice higher or lower....i used to be just an alto, but i pushed my range by singing soprano oprea and it increased me to a soprano. but my best suggesttion is take lessons, it will help you more than anything you do by yourself.
