Question:

How long does a carnival stay for and are there performances by humans?

I know carnivals feature mostly rides but are there performers as well? Example do people sing dance or act?

I just want to reinforce that most carnivals are rides and over priced food. But, there are many Side Shows and other live entertainers trying to keep the traditions "alive". The ones with live performer are the 10 in 1's. Originally they had ten acts and attractions for one price under the tent - original it was for "one thin dime". Today, few can afford a full ten live performers, but the Sideshows that are out there today pack the tent with fun and entertainment - you will be shocked and amazed. There are many small shows with one attraction like "Giant Rats" or "Tiny Horses". They are fun. Check them out, but I suggest trying a 10 in 1 full sideshow. You can find these venues at some carnivals and state fairs. They are very entertaining and worth supporting. I would suggest seeking out the world of Wonder Show put on by the legendary Ward Hall and his talented crew. They usually tour state fairs. More information and different performers and "routes", or where you can see working shows, can be found at this website - http://www.sideshowworld.com/ .

If you are looking live performers that sing and dance. I also recommend checking out the Renaissance Faires around the US also have many live entertainers that feature sideshow feats such as fire eating and sword swallower. These shows run for one to eight weekends. The large ones such as King Richard's Faire in Ma are very expensive (and often overpriced), but there are many smaller ones, such as the New Hampshire Renaissance Faire, which are affordable. You will also find small theater shows, variety acts, and music. Much of the entertainment is traditional, but much of it is less traditional and really fun.

One place to see a great side show performance is with the "Bindlestiff Family Cirkus", they tour around the country and can be seen at clubs and other venues. In my opinion the gentleman that plays Pennygraff/Kinko the Clown is one of the most talented live entertainers out there, and Philomena Bindlestiif is . . . well let just say everyone should lay their eyes on her multiple talents at least once. The "cirkus" are well worth any admission price, but be advised they are burlesque and are most likely not for children. They will entertain, amazing and challenge your mind with subtle (and not so subtle) anarchist social commentary.

Good luck and thanks for asking about live performances!
Go out and support this historic art form.

Please, Remember that these performers are not highly paid, when the hat is passed, you pass a tip jar, or can buy a souvenir "pitch card" dig deep in your pants and grab that special thing - your wallet - and drop a $5 - that's about 1/2 the cost of a mega-plex movie - or drop a little more if you like.
