Question:

Which school?

i am going to school to major in music so i can become a band director. i wanted to go to university of kentucky b/c that is where i am from but since i live in texas i heard that university of texas has a really good music program which one should i go to.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Where do you want to live after you graduate? Go to a school in that state. It is MUCH easier to get a job by building contacts in-state while you are still in school.

Beyond that, meet the band directors (both marching and concert if there are more than one at those schools) and professors for you major instrument. See if your ideas of music education and the learning process will work with theirs (and if you will work well with them). You will be spending most of your time with these people - (and they will eventually be writing your recommendations for either grad school or a JOB) make sure you will WANT to spend time with them!

I have found out the hard way how difficult it is to find employment (at least in the public school system) when you get your certification in a state other than the one where you live...and I've moved once again. It is MUCH easier to get your certification in the state where you plan to live!!

An aside: what kind of music is your favorite - marching? symphonic? jazz? UT is well-known for its marching band, and UNT has one of the nation's best jazz programs. I've had friends graduation from both schools; my college roommate chose UT over UK (which was her father's college).
