Question:

I dance ballet...?

i started ballet when i was 12(late, i know) but the instructors thought i could do well because i had taken dance at school. i was actually pretty good, and they put me on pointe when i was 14. but i still cant do the splits or a full leap, so even though im best on pointe at the academy, i cant be in copany. what should i do?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Stretch A LOT. It takes a lot of practice and flexibility to be able to do a split or a perfect leap. I've taken dance for the past 13 years and still have difficulties if I'm not completely stretched.

When you're watching TV or sitting doing homework, pop into a split. Sit with one leg straight out and the other leg bent behind you and stretch forward. Stretch by doing the 'butterfly' or by putting both legs out straight in front of you and lean over to touch your toes.

I know some dance teachers say it's wrong, but I was taught this way so you can take it or leave it: overstretch. Do a split, but place one leg on a chair or other surface (we used folded mats). You'll feel a stretch, but don't overdo it to the point where you pull a muscle.

Becoming more flexible takes effort. So be 100% dedicated. Picture a dancer with a perfect split, and say to your self that thats what you want. With any spare time, start stretching, and remember that if you get sore, it's one of those 'good pains.'

Good luck! :)
