Question:

Has anyone been to Glimmerglass Opera?

Its in upstate NY, near Albany. Reviews are great and they are doing a fantastic program this summer. What is the theatre like? What is the area like? Tell me all you know about it.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Cooperstown is beautiful. It is still very rural so be prepared to drive slow and respect the fact that the locals only interact with tourists three months out of the year. It is very crowded with tourists and artists, and parking in town is limited. Within Cooperstown, there's maybe one supermarket that's well off the main drag, as well as a fast food place or two. There are less than a handful of gas stations.

The theatre is intimate (I want to say less than 1000 seats) and I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. During the summer it gets very hot and the sides of the theatre's walls open like Delorian car doors - very cool - they are closed if it's raining. I agree that the season will be great, at least interesting, all 'Orpheus'. They sell light refreshments before the show and many people picnic on site hours before. There's plenty of parking and the grounds are lovely. I believe they have opera lectures before some shows. The bathrooms are located right outside the theatre and there are many.

Some days it's damp & cold and on others it's humid & hot so dress accordingly - it can get pretty uncomfortable.

Cooperstown has a main street that has all sorts of shops, casual dining, CVS, general store and the baseball hall of fame. Nice sites include: Lake Otesaga, Omegang Brewery, Doubleday Field, Fenimore Museum and the Otesaga Hotel. There's many more but those are some of the not-to-miss sites.

The closest town with typical strip malls is Oneonta about 25 minutes away. Albany is over an hour away in the other direction. Either way you go you will run into fast foods, quick marts, gas stations.

Cherry Valley and other smaller towns have nice shops & dining, as well as B&B's that serve delicious meals. One restaurant I recall is an old victorian that serves only breakfast and is very inexpensive. Another is a top-notch B&B that is very pricey. Sorry, I can't remember the names but anyone will know at Glimmerglass.

Have fun!
