Question:

I already clarinet and I'm thinking of playing bassoon...?

My friend was originally supposed to play it, but had to pull out because our director and her mom thought it would mess up her embrochure since she plays trumpet. Said friend also said that I should ask since I already play a reeded instrument. Would I mess up my clarinet embrochure if I were to start bassoon, and would it be "ok" for me to play it?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I don't think it'll be too much of a problem embrochure-wise. The main difference is you've got to be more gentle with the reed - as a double-reed it's much more sensitive to pressure, which makes it very pitch-sensitive (i.e. it can be hard to keep in tune).

In fact I knew other people at uni who played both properly - and thinking about it there are definitely times when bassoon/clarinet double up in orchestras ("Sweet Charity" certainly mixes bassoon/clarinet/saxophone parts in the same score - i.e. same person for all three instruments, and I vaguely remember "West Side Story" doing the same), so it's not a rare combination.

I wrote a lot more, but it was dull so I deleted it :)
