Question:

How do you sight-read sheet music?

I'm in a chorus and am soon going to be trying out for a more advanced chorus. I could never really read music and now I'm trying to learn before it's too late. If you could give me any useful tips on singing or reading music, I would much appreciate it. Anything would help me!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The way that I learned was I joined the church choir. Church choirs are good because they sing a different song each week, so they get good at learning songs quickly. As you sing, focus on the notes and which directions they move in and how far up or down they move.-this develops a sense of conture- notes go up, you go higher... And of course you want to learn as many songs as you can. Learning to sight read isn't the same as learning to sing, learning to sing you can just sing the same song a lot and get better. in sight reading you want to focus on learning as much music as you can the fastest. The more songs you are learning- possibly by joining different choirs at the same time- the better you will become with sight reading.

Of course if you have a sight reading teacher, there are other ways, maybe even more effective ways to learn it, but it is something you can start learning by yourself.
