Help! I'm stuck in a place with no gigs!?

I am from a small town with little to no serious opportunities for gigs. I am, however, very, very serious about a career in popular music as well as an extremely serious musician.

But alas! I am a minor with no car, no job (other than music), and no gigs other than Battle of the Bands (which does not provide income, but does do a valuable service of getting your name known.) I need to be known, but I can't.

Should I increase my search, or in their abscence, create gigs myself?
