Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Sing in front of people (church, karaoke, whatever) every chance you get and you'll get over it. I've sung karaoke for years and now I dive to grab that mike when it's my turn. Also, listen to as much karaoke as you can and see how awful most people are at singing and your confidence will increase.

Pick songs you have an emotional connection with (and read about method acting) and it's best to sing songs that were not big hits, since with a big hit, you'll be competing against the original singer in the minds of the audience.

Sing loud enough to hear yourself over the speakers. Rest the mike against one side of your mouth (it won't distort) and you can concentrate on singing when you don't have to think about your hand with the mike.

Close your eyes when you sing the verse (the hard part) and open them when you sing the chorus (the easy part)

Look for someone who looks interested and stare at them while you sing. It really helps (see song below).

Make sure your friend can sing; I've been sabotaged by doing duets with people I hadn't heard before we got up there when it turned out they were awful.

Better yet, don't share that spotlight unless you absolutely have to have them there to give you confidence. For those moments you're on stage, it's all about YOU, girl!!!

Artist/Band: Keith Whitley
Song: Ten Feet Away
Album: The Essential Keith Whitley

Alone at a corner table,
She was watching me watching her.
I was singin' about an old flame burning,
She was hanging on to every word.

I was pouring out my feelings,
She was pouring out the wine.
Through the smoke and the beer,
It was perfectly clear,
That we were touching each others minds.

Chorus:
It was love ten feet away.
Imagine her in my arms, with that look on her face.
Lying somewhere in some shadowy place.
It was love just ten feet away.

I just knew my closing song would do it,
I knew that I was heaven bound.
I could tell she was moved, but before I was through.
This stranger walked up and set down.

He was trying his best to impress her,
But she never took her eyes off me.
When he got up and left, I said to myself...
Whoa . . . what a night this will be.

Chorus: x2
