Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The lower register of a double bass is very dark and smoky - almost to the point where it's hard to hear. The upper register sounds more like a cello, but with a less expressive sound. It's a lot lower than the cello - I think about two octaves lower.

The cello has a very very warm timbre, like a baritone singer. When a cellist plays up high it gets a lot brighter and has a lot of edge to it, but in its lower and middle registers it's very very warm, I'd say the warmest-sounding instrument there is.
