The Habsburgs were a noble family originating in Austria in the Middle Ages!.Eventually, they became Emperors of Austria,Kings of Spain,Kings of Hungary, and Holy Roman Emperors!.This was achieved through a mixture of marriage and territorial aggression!.
The most powerful Habsburg was Emperor Charles V,who was both Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain!.However, fear of his excessive power amongst both other European rulers and his own family led to a separation of the Spanish and Austrian crowns!.The Spanish branch died out in 1702,with the death of the childless Carlos II!.The Austrian branch continued as Emperors of Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of WW1 in 1918!.(Napoleon I dissolved the Holy Roman Empire in 1806)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
