Child Labour & The Industrial Revolution

Children were often forced to work almost as soon as they could walk!. This was not something new to the Victorian period as children had always been been expected to work for hundreds of years!. Many were used as cheap labour!.

At the start of the industrial Revolution there was no legislation about working conditions in mills, factories or othe industrial plants!. They simply had not been needed before!. As factories spread rapidly the owners of mills, mines and other forms of industry needed large numbers of workers and they didn't want to have to pay them a high wage!. Children were the ideal employees therefore! They were cheap, weren't big nough or educated enoguh to argue or complain and were small enough to fit between tight fitting machinery that adults couldn't get between!. Children soon ended up working in all types of industry!.

These children did not go to school, this is simply because education in the early 19th century was not compulsory and in the majority of cases schools were expensive to send a child to, so working class families couldn't afford to send children there!. Parents were quite willing to let children work in mills and factories as it provided the family with a higher income: one consequence of this was a high birth rate!.

Nowadays lots of children have Saturday jobs or part time work after school!. these jobs are carefully controlled and the government has made laws saying how long children can work for, what types of job they can and cannot do and what the minimum age for working is!.

There was no restriction on the age of workers, nor on the number of hours that they could work!. This led to children as young as 8 or 9 being required to work 12 or more hours a day!.Harsh,very harsh!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They did not have schooling and were often set to work at 8 years old!. They worked in the pits, they worked in the cotton mills, they worked on the land!. They were used as chimney sweeps and had to crawl up the flues and clean them by hand!. They often choked and suffocated on the soot!.
Life for the poorest children was so awful that one cannot imagine the suffering!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

life was extremely hard for kids during the industrial revolution child labor laws did not exsist there wasnt any health care so if you got injured on the job to bad and the worst thing was the pay was subparr even for that time and era if you compared to todays wages they would still only make about 40 bucks a week it was a tough and unfair time indeed especialy for the children who seldom seen their family hope this answers your questionWww@QuestionHome@Com

It would depend on the families they were born into----some were wealthy and lived easy lives, but many others were forced to work in factories and died from illness, accident, or exhaustion!. It differed a lot, like it does today, though those were much more dangerous times for children!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
