Are we talking medieval artillery !? My first answer would be the 'trebuchet', simply put 'great bucket'!. It had much longer range and power than the traditional catapult or 'mangonel' and 'onager', and could be used to hurl burning pots of oil or even dead animal carcases over walls in order to spread disease!. It was the main siege weapon until the age of gunpowder arrived!. Edward I used a trebuchet known as the 'War Wolf' in his campaigns against the Scots, reducing Stirling castle to rubble with it in 1304!.

Once gunpowder weapons were established, the 'bombard' was used to fire large cannonballs directly at wall or gates to break them down!. A bombard known as 'Mons Meg', currently on display at Edinburgh castle in Scotland, was known to have been used in the siege of Northam castle in 1497, had an 18 inch calibre and could fire 189lb stone shot a distance of over a mile and a half!. An even larger bombard, the 'Great Turkish bombard', had a 30 inch calibre and saw action in the Fall of Constantinople in 1453!.

Later came the development of the 'mortar'!. It was able to fire shot over walls at a high trajectory!. It was these developments which eventually ended the age of castle building!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The catapult used extensively from 399bc to about 1300ad, was ultimately replaced by the cannon!. The catapult was known by many names, also of varying designs and used to hurl various objects in warfare, it was ultimately replaced by the gun powder activated cannon firstly used to propel a solid object and later incorporated exploding projectiles!.
From 399bc to present day it has been a never ending quest to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of these weapons of warfare to the detriment of mankind!. A little known fact "more people died from the effects of exploding cannon shells during WW 2 than by any other weapon!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, there was the onager before the catapault, and the catapault was replaced in Medieval times by the trebuchet!. As most such technological weapons of this time it was invented by Chinese scholars (Like gunpowder) centuries before the Europeans got their hands on it!.

THe trebuchet was a large sling which was a amazing piece of technology, it smashed walls in the Holy Land and ruled European warfare for 300 years before cannons started to replace it (As in the Hundred year's War near the end, the French counter attacks used cannons!. The English attacks around fifty years into the war used two massive cannons)!. It was fully replaced around 1550!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
