It was the first war to use "modern" weapons on a large scale!. Aeroplanes, tanks, poison gas, machine guns all saw wide use for the first time during WWI as well as long range artillery!.

I believe it was also the first major conflict to make wide use of conscription whereby young men are forced to join the military!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Technology had defiantly advanced, rather than “Gentleman’s warfare” where we stand in lines and shoot at each other they were fighting wars in trenches, in the sea, and in the air!.

Furthermore this was the first war with mass communication (the telegraph) where information could be transmitted almost instantly along great distances!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

One point is that the technology used in WW1 was more advanced than the wars prior to it!. The germans were able to use yellow choke gas and weaponize it for trench warfare, another idea would be the fact that it was the first global war and included most every major country in the world, and effected every country!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It differed in scale!. Almost everything else was already tried out before:
- Mass conscription was normal since Napoleon!.
- We see extensive trench warfare during the American Civil War!.
- Improved infantry tactics and machine guns were used by the Boers!.
- Airplanes were already used in (colonial) warfare in North Africa!.
- One might even ague that the First World War was the Seven Years war, which was also fought on all continents!.
