The competing national views, as you put it, of Hamilton and Jefferson involved their view of government and the way it should work!.

Hamilton favored a strong government that would favor the interests of big business!.

Jefferson, on the other hand, feared a strong government because the colonists had just fought for their freedom from the Crown!. He also saw the way the French elites oppressed the lower classes into oblivion through their lives of excess!.

The other main point of contention were their views on the Constitution!. Hamilton strongly believed that the government had "implied powers," or the ability to do anything that the Constitution did not specifically ban!. Jefferson believed just the opposite!. He preferred a weak national government that was restricted by the Constitution and believed in the concept of States' Rights!.

Now, it's impossible to say whether either would have been a Democrat or a Republican!. Hamilton, like the Democrats, favored a strong government!. His economic philosophy, however, is much more Republican in nature!.

Jefferson's view on civil liberties chimes with liberal Democrats everywhere, but his foreign policy and his fear of government reminds me more of someone like Ronald Reagan!.
