Slaves were originally captives taken by warring enemies!. It didn't start out as a black and white thing, or from racial prejudice, but as something regarded at the time as an economic necessity and/or spoils of war!. People of any kind were often enslaved by their own race (if not necessarily their own tribe or nation)!. Europeans often bought African slaves from other Africans!. In America and other countries freed blacks as well as whites were often slaveowners and there were also American Indian slaves and slave owners!. Even some whites and Asians (convicts, debtors, even prostitutes) were bought and sold as slave labor!. Racism resulted from slavery, not vice-versa!. Both are evil but I'd say slavery came first!. Racism followed largely as an outgrowth of the moral superiority which Christian Europeans imagined themselves to possess as colonizers and alleged civilizers of the world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Throughout history nearly all slaves have been of a different tribe or race, either captured or sold through militaristic actions!. Few slaves have come from within a population, those that have were either minorities or political opponents!. So xenophobia or ethnocentrism (which have been, wrongly, simplified to racism) are at the base of slavery, if you accept that slavery is (aside from the economic benefits of cheap forced labour) a method of demonstrating superiority over another ethnic grouping!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Slavery!.
