This area has a long history of settlement!. Originally, it was called the land of Canaan and its inhabitants were Hebrews, Hittites, and later Philistines!. The area would be conquered and claimed by Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians (Alex da great)!. Seleucus, one of Alexander’s generals claimed the area after Alexander’s death and thus founded the Seleucid Empire, which later tried to outlaw Judaism and caused a Jewish revolt!. After the revolt, the area enjoyed Roman protection (which didn’t include protection from Rome) and soon Roman armies would invade and rename the area Palaestina!. Fast forward a few hundred years to about 600 AD, enter the Muslim armies, followed by the crusaders, followed by the Muslims again!. Still later we have the mis-management of the area by Egyptians and Ottomans that caused quite a bit of depopulation and famine!. Since then it’s been occupied pretty much by Jews and Arabs who both love the neighborhood!. Nutshell!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

This is a complex question and there is no easy answer!. Are you asking for who lived there!? Or are you asking who was there!? The word "occupied" does not really hint as to what you are looking for but here it goes!.

Prior to 1948 There was no Israel!. It was called Palestine!. It had been owned by the Ottoman Empire/Turky prior to WWI!. After WWI to 1948 it was "owned" by the British!. The oldest majority population were the Palestine (who were mostly Muslim but there was about 30% Christian and Jewish members) There was a movement for European Jews to migrate to Palestine after WWII!. The British tried to stop the European Jews from migrating to Palestine but their success was very limited!. Prior to Israel, the number of European Jew did go up in Palestine!. Now this is the hard part!. The people of Palestine were not happy for the EJ coming into Palestine!. They did take over there land and there are arguments pro and con for the migration of EJ to Palestine but that is not part of your question is it!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Arabs!. Palestinians is just another name for the group of Arabs in the area, who take their name from the Philistines!.

And in a few small villages, still, the Samaritans!. Their religion is actually very similar to Judaism, except they do not recognize the same books of the Old Testament!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
