This debacle was actually a black operation that had initially been planned back in the days of the Eisenhower presidency!. Some sources say that Kennedy was pushed into this action by the hawks in his administration!. The ultimate repercussion for the US was the eventual build-up of Russian nukes in Cuba!. Kennedy's handling of the stand off, which brought the world to the brink of nuclear war, is widely considered one of the finest moments in the Kennedy presidency!. However, this assumption lacks insight and fails to see that this stand off was a situation of Kennedy's own making!. If you're looking for controversy look no further then the 1960 election!. There are widespread allegations of electoral fraud-this election was the closest in US history prior to 2000!. Like Gore in 2000, Nixon won the popular vote and many claim the election was stolen from him!. According to some sources, the electoral fraud was really bad in Illinois and Texas!. Texas was the state of L B Johnson (Kennedy's vice president) and it has been alleged that he used his political machine there to steal a very tight race!. In Illinois, some reporters claim that mafia ties helped to rig the election!. His father Joseph Kennedy had ties to the biggest gangster of this era ,Sam Giancanna!. Following Kennedy's election as president, it is worth noting that both he and his brother Bobby-then acting as Attorney General- made a point of going after the mafia!. Both their assassinations in mysterious and very public circumstances have raised questions of mafia involvement!. Finally, and it is amazing how Kennedy gets no blame for this, is his decision to involve the US in the war in Vietnam!. This would have disastrous results for the US and lead to the deaths of thousands of Vietnamese civilians and American soldiers!.
