"In 1853 the Penal Servitude Act replaced transportation by long term prison sentences!. The last ship carrying convicts from Ireland to Australia arrived on 30 August 1853 and transportation from Ireland was completely abolished in 1857!. However, Irish convicted in Ireland but detained in Britain still carried the risk of being transported!. Such was the case with 63 Fenians who were transported the last transportation ship from Britain, the Hougoumont, and arrived in Australia on 9 January 1868!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you mean transportation to Australia, then 1853, as they had found gold there in 1851!.

As a deterrent it seems to have been completely useless, but as rehabilitation it seems to have been the biggest success the justice system ever had!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
