Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
They HAD calendars then!

Lunisolar, Solar, Lunar, the Greeks and Egyptians had calendars!

They only got MORE accurate as time went on!.

The Julian calendar, a reform of the Roman calendar, was introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BC, and came into force in 45 BC!.

It was designed to approximate the tropical year, known at least since Hipparchus!. It has a regular year of 365 days divided into 12 months, and a leap day is added to February every four years!. Hence the Julian year is on average 365!.25 days long!.

The ordinary year in the previous Roman calendar consisted of 12 months, for a total of 355 days!.

Calendars were based on ASTROLOGY, ancient astrologists were on their jobs back then!.
The Babylonians and Egyptians had awesome calendars!.
The South American Empires!.!.!.!.the Incas, the Aztecs, the Mayans had calendars good for THOUSDANDS of years!.

That is why we know the dates of events that happened in 483BC!.!.!.!.it was durung that time period that Greece fought the Persian Wars!.
We know the dates because they had calendars!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

well, they did have records on papyrus and scrolls!. For example, the great library of Alexandria, which was burned down by the crusaders!.
Otherwise, it would just be by word of mouth, or passed down generations, with only approximate time scales (except in the bible, where they really got their numbers wrong, ie Methuselah living to be hundreds of years old)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Two ways:

By ruler, such as in the 15th year of Alexander's Reign!.

Or by a Zodiac Calendar, such as the Earth being in a certain constellation and it would be X year of Y Constellation!. There is somewhat of a science behind this known as archaeoastronomy, which chronicles how people used celestial bodies for things like Calendars and navigation!.

You can precisely name when the Nile will flood through astronomy!. Astrological calendars were known by the Chinese, Hindis, Egyptians, Mayans, and so on!.!.!.

If you doubt that they could have known this in such primitive times, look into the origin of Pi (we measure circles in 360 degrees because of the Sumerians) and Sacred Geometry!. It gets pretty impressive what they knew and how they knew it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

They couldn't have with any accuracy!. They would have relied mostly on oral tradition and perhaps some early manuscripts!.

To the other answerer -- they didn't have carbon dating -- sigh!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
