if I remember right Ho Chi min needed help fighting for his cause!. He asked the west for help, they refused!. He then turned to china and the communists!. Belgium and France were involved in fighting Ho Chi min, as they had interests there (rubber plantations), got their butt kicked, and asked the U!.S!. for help!. Eisenhower sent in advisors in the late 50s, early 60's!. Kennedy sent in more troops and made if a full fledged war!. Johnson tried to run the war politically, which was a disaster!. We would take a hill, then pull back, then 'charlie' (the viet cong guerillas), would be back on the hill that night lobbing mortars at us!.
When Nixon was elected, he was left with a huge mess!. The greatest fear was if Vietnam fell, then the rest of Indonesia would fall to communism!.
after massive 'peace' riots in the States, nixon pulled the troops out and left the south vietnamese to fend for themselves!. They were over run by the communist north within 2 years!.
The hippies and peaceniks had their victory!.
Then the worst fears became reality, and communism was spreading through the whole region!. Pol Pot was a communist in Cambodia that killed over 2 million people!. If you wore a pair of glasses, that meant you could read, therefore a threat to the government, so you had to die!.
